+This directory attempts to document the ABI between the Linux kernel and
+userspace, and the relative stability of these interfaces.  Due to the
+everchanging nature of Linux, and the differing maturity levels, these
+interfaces should be used by userspace programs in different ways.
+
+We have four different levels of ABI stability, as shown by the four
+different subdirectories in this location.  Interfaces may change levels
+of stability according to the rules described below.
+
+The different levels of stability are:
+
+  stable/
+	This directory documents the interfaces that the developer has
+	defined to be stable.  Userspace programs are free to use these
+	interfaces with no restrictions, and backward compatibility for
+	them will be guaranteed for at least 2 years.  Most interfaces
+	(like syscalls) are expected to never change and always be
+	available.
+
+  testing/
+	This directory documents interfaces that are felt to be stable,
+	as the main development of this interface has been completed.
+	The interface can be changed to add new features, but the
+	current interface will not break by doing this, unless grave
+	errors or security problems are found in them.  Userspace
+	programs can start to rely on these interfaces, but they must be
+	aware of changes that can occur before these interfaces move to
+	be marked stable.  Programs that use these interfaces are
+	strongly encouraged to add their name to the description of
+	these interfaces, so that the kernel developers can easily
+	notify them if any changes occur (see the description of the
+	layout of the files below for details on how to do this.)
+
+  obsolete/
+  	This directory documents interfaces that are still remaining in
+	the kernel, but are marked to be removed at some later point in
+	time.  The description of the interface will document the reason
+	why it is obsolete and when it can be expected to be removed.
+	The file Documentation/feature-removal-schedule.txt may describe
+	some of these interfaces, giving a schedule for when they will
+	be removed.
+
+  removed/
+	This directory contains a list of the old interfaces that have
+	been removed from the kernel.
+
+Every file in these directories will contain the following information:
+
+What:		Short description of the interface
+Date:		Date created
+KernelVersion:	Kernel version this feature first showed up in.
+Contact:	Primary contact for this interface (may be a mailing list)
+Description:	Long description of the interface and how to use it.
+Users:		All users of this interface who wish to be notified when
+		it changes.  This is very important for interfaces in
+		the "testing" stage, so that kernel developers can work
+		with userspace developers to ensure that things do not
+		break in ways that are unacceptable.  It is also
+		important to get feedback for these interfaces to make
+		sure they are working in a proper way and do not need to
+		be changed further.
+
+
+How things move between levels:
+
+Interfaces in stable may move to obsolete, as long as the proper
+notification is given.
+
+Interfaces may be removed from obsolete and the kernel as long as the
+documented amount of time has gone by.
+
+Interfaces in the testing state can move to the stable state when the
+developers feel they are finished.  They cannot be removed from the
+kernel tree without going through the obsolete state first.
+
+It's up to the developer to place their interfaces in the category they
+wish for it to start out in.

+Why:	/proc/<pid>/oom_adj allows userspace to influence the oom killer's
+	badness heuristic used to determine which task to kill when the kernel
+	is out of memory.
+
+	The badness heuristic has since been rewritten since the introduction of
+	this tunable such that its meaning is deprecated.  The value was
+	implemented as a bitshift on a score generated by the badness()
+	function that did not have any precise units of measure.  With the
+	rewrite, the score is given as a proportion of available memory to the
+	task allocating pages, so using a bitshift which grows the score
+	exponentially is, thus, impossible to tune with fine granularity.
+
+	A much more powerful interface, /proc/<pid>/oom_score_adj, was
+	introduced with the oom killer rewrite that allows users to increase or
+	decrease the badness() score linearly.  This interface will replace
+	/proc/<pid>/oom_adj.
+
+	A warning will be emitted to the kernel log if an application uses this
+	deprecated interface.  After it is printed once, future warnings will be
+	suppressed until the kernel is rebooted.

+		Each USB device directory will contain a file named
+		power/level.  This file holds a power-level setting for
+		the device, either "on" or "auto".
+
+		"on" means that the device is not allowed to autosuspend,
+		although normal suspends for system sleep will still
+		be honored.  "auto" means the device will autosuspend
+		and autoresume in the usual manner, according to the
+		capabilities of its driver.
+
+		During normal use, devices should be left in the "auto"
+		level.  The "on" level is meant for administrative uses.
+		If you want to suspend a device immediately but leave it
+		free to wake up in response to I/O requests, you should
+		write "0" to power/autosuspend.
+
+		Device not capable of proper suspend and resume should be
+		left in the "on" level.  Although the USB spec requires
+		devices to support suspend/resume, many of them do not.
+		In fact so many don't that by default, the USB core
+		initializes all non-hub devices in the "on" level.  Some
+		drivers may change this setting when they are bound.
+
+		This file is deprecated and will be removed after 2010.
+		Use the power/control file instead; it does exactly the
+		same thing.

+		Some devices support "wakeup" events, which are hardware signals

+		In that cases the user space can change the setting represented

+		The /sys/devices/.../power/autosuspend_delay_ms attribute
+		contains the autosuspend delay value (in milliseconds).  Some
+		drivers do not want their device to suspend as soon as it
+		becomes idle at run time; they want the device to remain
+		inactive for a certain minimum period of time first.  That
+		period is called the autosuspend delay.  Negative values will
+		prevent the device from being suspended at run time (similar
+		to writing "on" to the power/control attribute).  Values >=
+		1000 will cause the autosuspend timer expiration to be rounded
+		up to the nearest second.

+		Not all drivers support this attribute.  If it isn't supported,
+		attempts to read or write it will yield I/O errors.

+		All ACPI interrupts are handled via a single IRQ,
+		the System Control Interrupt (SCI), which appears
+		as "acpi" in /proc/interrupts.
+
+		However, one of the main functions of ACPI is to make
+		the platform understand random hardware without
+		special driver support.  So while the SCI handles a few
+		well known (fixed feature) interrupts sources, such
+		as the power button, it can also handle a variable
+		number of a "General Purpose Events" (GPE).

+		A GPE vectors to a specified handler in AML, which
+		can do a anything the BIOS writer wants from
+		OS context.  GPE 0x12, for example, would vector
+		to a level or edge handler called _L12 or _E12.
+		The handler may do its business and return.
+		Or the handler may send send a Notify event
+		to a Linux device driver registered on an ACPI device,
+		such as a battery, or a processor.

+		On all platforms, the firmware provides a memory map which the
+		kernel reads. The resources from that memory map are registered
+		in the kernel resource tree and exposed to userspace via
+		/proc/iomem (together with other resources).
+
+		However, on most architectures that firmware-provided memory
+		map is modified afterwards by the kernel itself, either because
+		the kernel merges that memory map with other information or
+		just because the user overwrites that memory map via command
+		line.
+
+		kexec needs the raw firmware-provided memory map to setup the
+		parameter segment of the kernel that should be booted with
+		kexec. Also, the raw memory map is useful for debugging. For
+		that reason, /sys/firmware/memmap is an interface that provides
+		the raw memory map to userspace.
+
+		The structure is as follows: Under /sys/firmware/memmap there
+		are subdirectories with the number of the entry as their name:
+
+			/sys/firmware/memmap/0
+			/sys/firmware/memmap/1
+			/sys/firmware/memmap/2
+			/sys/firmware/memmap/3
+			...
+
+		The maximum depends on the number of memory map entries provided
+		by the firmware. The order is just the order that the firmware

+		sleep on the next suspend.  There are four methods supported:
+		'firmware' - means that the memory image will be saved to disk
+		by some firmware, in which case we also assume that the
+		firmware will handle the system suspend.
+		'platform' - the memory image will be saved by the kernel and
+		the system will be put to sleep by the platform driver (e.g.
+		ACPI or other PM registers).
+		'shutdown' - the memory image will be saved by the kernel and
+		the system will be powered off.
+		'reboot' - the memory image will be saved by the kernel and
+		the system will be rebooted.
+
+		Additionally, /sys/power/disk can be used to turn on one of the
+		two testing modes of the suspend-to-disk mechanism: 'testproc'
+		or 'test'.  If the suspend-to-disk mechanism is in the
+		'testproc' mode, writing 'disk' to /sys/power/state will cause
+		the kernel to disable nonboot CPUs and freeze tasks, wait for 5
+		seconds, unfreeze tasks and enable nonboot CPUs.  If it is in
+		the 'test' mode, writing 'disk' to /sys/power/state will cause
+		the kernel to disable nonboot CPUs and freeze tasks, shrink
+		memory, suspend devices, wait for 5 seconds, resume devices,
+		unfreeze tasks and enable nonboot CPUs.  Then, we are able to
+		look in the log messages and work out, for example, which code
+		is being slow and which device drivers are misbehaving.

+		The suspend-to-disk method may be chosen by writing to this

+		it contains '0' which may be changed to '1' by writing a
+		string representing a nonzero integer into it.

+		To use this debugging feature you should attempt to suspend
+		the machine, then reboot it and run

+		If you do not get any matches (or they appear to be false
+		positives), it is possible that the last PM event point
+		referred to a device created by a loadable kernel module.  In

+                The sequence of operations should be:

+                2. The connection manager (CM) sees a device with CBA capability.

+                3. The CM writes the host name, supported band groups,
+                   and the CHID (host ID) into the wusb_host_name,

+                   get sent to the device and the CDID (if any) for
+                   this host is requested.

+                4. The CM can verify that the device's supported band
+                   groups (wusb_device_band_groups) are compatible

+                   - If it has a matching CHID,CDID entry, the device
+                     has been authorized before and nothing further
+                     needs to be done.

+                   - If the CDID is zero (or the CM doesn't find a
+                     matching CDID in its database), the device is
+                     assumed to be not known.  The CM may associate
+                     the host with device by: writing a randomly
+                     generated CDID to wusb_cdid and then a random CK
+                     to wusb_ck (this uploads the new CC to the
+                     device).

+                     CMD may choose to prompt the user before
+                     associating with a new device.

+                7. Device is unplugged.
